Part 1 of a story starring University Town's very own security system, the Night Guard! Hope you enjoy

TERRY the Purrloin is now open to asks on askteampolarize.tumblr.com/
----

He enjoyed his job. Even after dropping out, he’d have given his whiskers to keep working in Ebark (or Univeristy Town, as most called it). It was safe, it was quaint and if you happened to fancy adventure, you could find it right outside the city gates. Terry the Purrloin knew the terrain around the town like his own paw- that was part of your duties, if you were an officer of the Night Guard. Every evening, he and his Purrloin comrades were dispatched in the wilderness beyond the Walls and would patrol the dungeon all night long, keeping an eye for any citizen or travellers who may happen to come back after the gateway closing hour.

Yes, the dungeon. Fog hadn’t been an issue around University Town for a long time, but for one single reason: the paths ran atop a system of densely forested hills, that constituted an actual, if rather mild, dungeon. The roads and bridges were laid by the ancient people of Ebark, in a cooperative effort with the nearby tribes, whom had eventually been incorporated into the city itself once it started expanding. The act seemed to repel the Fog, thus the Town was an important crossroad for travellers. Terry remembered this back from when he was a History student. In a twinge of nostalgia, he wished he could still live on campus.

He walked merrily, on two legs to get a better view of his surroundings, nimbly climbing from one level of the forest to the upper one, making use of the rope ladders and light wooden bridges he and his colleagues had assembled. Despite his jolly disposition, his senses were alert. He could hear the sound of the other night guards making their way through the dungeon, even though nobody who wasn’t one of them would have been able to distinguish it from wind sweeping through the leaves. And, high up in the skies, he knew their boss was soaring, taking advantage of the highest treetops and the system of air currents that rushed between the hilltops. He, like all of them, also kept a vigilant eye on the paths.

An unfamiliar sound did come to Terry’s sensitive ears though. Three pairs of feet and a quartet of paws: two soft, two clawed, two heavy and the last were also very soft and probably belonged to somebody who walked on all four. He jumped from one tree to the next so he could peek at the road, and sure enough, there they were: a Snover, a Luxio, a Quilava and a Sneasel. He couldn’t help but wonder why a Fire type would keep their flames down while travelling in the night, but he was also glad about it, this dungeon in particular being a forest. His job dictated he did not show himself unless help was needed, so he remained in the treetop, not wanting to interfere. However he’d have need to follow them, because the gates were not all that close.
